How To Fish

Bait Selection: Using hanging bait in a crab trap is arguably one of the most important aspects of crabbing, and these bait pins are an easy way to rig your hanging bait. A common practice is using fish heads or carcasses from past fishing trips. Using hanging bait not only provides scent dispersion, but it gives the hungry crab a reason to actually find their way into the trap. A large clump of dead hanging bait is like candy to a crab, and they will do whatever they can to find a way into the trap. Fishing with only frozen jar bait like squid or mackerel will entice crabs in the area but does not nearly have the drawing power that fish heads or carcasses have. For an even better way to rig your crab traps, include both hanging bait (carcasses) on a bait pin as well as some sort of frozen jar bait (squid, mackerel, etc...). The frozen squid or baitfish will add even more scent dispersion to your trap as well as last much longer as the bait is protected and out of reach from crab which have found their way into the pot.

Operation: To begin, simply open the pin and use the long end to skewer the pieces of bait. The pieces of bait will slide down to the bottom of the rounded end. Once the bait is on the pin, simply attach the bait pin to the trap by closing the pin around the wire mesh or metal rods on your trap/pot. The trap is now ready to be fished.
